Mobile Site Comparison - Ben Leavitt

Brigham Young University Website

Finding content

Finding content is quite nice on this website. You can scroll down quite a bit to find content and the navigation is easy to find and clear to read.

Clarity of text, images and media

The text is a nice contrasy and bright color scheme of white, blue and black with grey accent colors. Images load quickly and have onsistent sizing and quality standards.

Navigation

There's a navigation hamburger button in the upper right corner of the screen which opens up an accordion style menu to navigate to any place in the website. There's also an icon for students to click on to log in to their profiles and a search icon to generally search the entire website. There is also a live chat button attached to the right hand side of the screen for easy access no matter where you are on the page.

Colors and layout

The colors are kept to a maximum of three, cougar blue, white, and black/grey. The layout is clean and simple using repeating rectangles throughout the website.

Likes and Dislikes

I really like the design of the school's website. it's easy to find things and the colors look great together. I don't like how it looks once a student signs in though. All the fonts get very small and the design seems crowded. Last year when we had i-Learn 2 you couldn't even navigate through the i-learn website on a mobile device. Windows would crash, resizing things was a nightmare. Now the design is very mobile friendly, with some quirks. One thing I'd like to see on the main page is to have the navigation stay put as you scroll down. As it is now, if you are scrolling down the page you have to manually scoll all the way up again because the navigation is still up there and there are no links to bring you back to the top.

Finding content

When loading this website on a mobile device there is a while lot of information coming at you at once. It's fairly easy to find the navigation, but it is too much information to display on such a tiny screen and so all the words are too small to read and therefore it's hard to find what you're looking for without pinching and zooming in all the time.

Clarity of text, images and media

The text, images and media are much too small on the screen to interpret unless you zoom in. The only exception to this is their advertizing banners. The larger product images are nice though and easy to use for navigation.

Navigation

Navigation is great for a desktop user, but as a mobile user you need to zoom in on the menus in order to even see what the headings say. The layout of the navigation is very logical and clean.

Colors and layout

This website has a main color scheme of white, blue, tan and orange. In order to feature certain things, they have introduced a few other colors like green and yellow which make it seem a bit busier than it needs to be.

Likes and Dislikes

I really like how they use images instead of text to grab people's attention to the products they are featuring. The deals on this website are pretty slick too. What I don't like the most is how tiny everything is on the website for mobile. They could have possibly simplified the front page and added accordion nav to it to make it easier to navigate.
